In 1833, the
Royal William, built in
1831 in Cape Blanc, Quebec, was the first ocean-going steamship
to cross the Atlantic from Pictou, Nova Scotia to Gravesend, England.

In 1773, 200 Scottish settlers arrived in Pictou on the ship Hector.
Today, the Hector Heritage Quay
in Pictou marks the journey.
